Distant Learning Problem Solving

Creating meaningful problem solving experiences through distance learning is challenging for teachers:

  • When trying to solve word problems, many students struggle to know where to begin without some teacher or partner assistance.

  • Probing the room to observe student attack strategies and interpret their thinking is not possible.

  • Discussing diagrams, solutions, etc. with a partner is rarely possible.

  • It’s difficult to gauge student effort and perseverance.

Teachers must accept that they’re inhabiting an imperfect profession in an imperfect world and shift their distant learning problem solving expectations. Below are a few methods to engage students with daily critical thinking.
